About Access Grid

The Access Grid™ is an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments.

These resources are used to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid. For example, the Access Grid (AG) is used for large-scale distributed meetings, collaborative work sessions, seminars, lectures, tutorials, and training. The Access Grid thus differs from desktop-to-desktop tools that focus on individual communication.

The Access Grid is now used at over 200 institutions worldwide. Each institution has one or more AG nodes, or "designed spaces," that contain the high-end audio and visual technology needed to provide a high-quality compelling user experience. The nodes are also used as a research environment for the development of distributed data and visualization corridors and for the study of issues relating to collaborative work in distributed environments.

The AG technology was developed by the Futures Laboratory at Argonne National Laboratory and is deployed by the NCSA PACI Alliance.

Setting up the First AG node in Singapore

Over 200 access grid nodes around the world are collaborating using the AG technology. In December 2003, the first advanced AG node was set up in Singapore.

The design considerations for this AG node recognises it to bemobile and an all-in-one machine configuration. The objective is for this mobile AG node to be deployable to any site to AG-enable any talk, seminar or conference.

* The Access Grid 2.0 reference platform defines an advanced node as one which has tiled displays, and provisions for multiple video streams and a localized audio.

Launch of AG

The Access Grid node was launched on the 2 April 2004 when Professor Carole Goble (University of Manchester) presented on the myGrid UK e-Science project. This session was held at the auditorium of the Institute for Infocomm Research and drew a crowd of close to 100 attendees. This was part of the pre-symposium activities of the Life Sciences Virtual Grid Community Symposium 2004.

Other Efforts

The National Grid Office extends the use of the AG node to the NGPP stakeholders, with the goal of using AG to enable international collaborations, and broadcast of important events such as keynotes speeches of international conferences.

In addition, the National Grid Competency Centre conducts training courses on “Setting up of an AG node” to provide information on AG as well as to equip them with the necessary skills to set up their own AG node.

Since then, there are 4 other AG nodes in Singapore. These include the Institute for High Performance Computing, the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, and the Nanyang Technological University (2 nodes).

The NGO has also established an AG Special Interest Group (SIG) for the local AG community to share and discuss on setup, pertinent issues, future plans, and align the efforts with the direction of AG for Singapore.
