IDA-NLB Public Talk Series on Cloud Computing: Data Privacy & Your Business in the Cloud

Abstract

Singapore may introduce legislation to protect consumers’ data in early 2012 and chiefly among other reasons” the proposed law… (is supposed to) enhance Singapore’s overall competitiveness and strengthen our position as a trusted hub for businesses.” In this short discussion, we will consider the following key issues confronting business and not-for-profit organizations:

• Potential impact on businesses and organizations from the introduction of a data privacy regulatory regime;

• Contractual issues relating to cloud computing; and

• Cross border and other related governance considerations in adopting cloud computing technology as a competitive edge for business.

About the Speaker

KK Lim

KK‘s research interest focuses on the impact of technology and law on businesses. He is actively involved in the information security community as Secretary of AiSP (www.aisp.sg), is an Editorial Board Member of The Journal of Information Privacy and Security, University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and was recently elected as President of Singapore Cloud Forum (www.cloud.org.sg), a not-for-profit community of cloud computing professionals.

His publications on data privacy development can be found in the Global Privacy and Security Law Reference: Chapter on Singapore, Wolters Kluwer (Law & Business), Aspen Publishers (2009) and commentaries on recent data privacy developments with The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), US. He is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin, Monash University School of Law, and National University of Singapore Law Faculty. He is also a Certified Information Security Manager. He is currently doing advanced legal research on information risk management and professional negligence. He is an academic staff with Nanyang Polytechnic School of Information Technology. Prior to joining Nanyang Polytechnic, he was the Chief Privacy Officer (APAC) and Counsel for a global pharmaceutical research company. The opinions expressed at this talk do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of these organizations.

This talk series on Cloud Computing is organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, supported by National Library Board, Singapore Computer Society Special Interest Group on Enterprise Cloud Computing & Virtualisation and Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore.
