Abstract

Data as a service as (DaaS) is a set of technologies which simplify the creation of a datamarket. A DaaS can be private, restricted to a set of identified users or publicly available to all users on the internet.

The talk today is devoted to public DaaS. The idea of a public DaaS is to bring together trusted premium and public domain data, imagery and web services into a single location. With a library of data that is constantly growing in size, businesses get easier access to data with rich visualization tools that help them evaluate datasets before they commit, while developers can take advantage of standardized accessed methods to build easy ways to integrate data into business applications. And because all the data is presented consistently from start to finish, businesses get the information they need at the tips of their fingers.

A DaaS should also provide tools that aid businesses to discover, purchase, and view the data. It should also incorporate tools to make it a snap to mash up data from DaaS with on-premise information to get more sophisticated analysis. Lastly one should be able to build tailored applications that work the way you do.

We will illustrate these concepts with Windows Azure Marketplace DaaS which is a single place for consumers to discover, purchase and manage premium data subscriptions. Azure Marketplace also enables leading content providers to reach millions of new customers and developers, and build innovative applications. With Azure Marketplace, you can use virtually any platform, application or business workfow—and that means it’s easier than ever to use data to power your business success. We intend to show demonstrations of what it means for the consumer, the content provider and the developer.

For the consumer, we will describe the DaaS purchase process which removes the very real hassle for organizations that subscribe to multiple datasets from different companies. In effect, data providers set their price, and Azure Marketplace handles all the billing. In addition, you can choose how you pay, whether it’s pay-as-you-go transactions or monthly subscriptions. The one-stop shop for all business data needs. Organizations can take advantage of DaaS to get any type of data they need.

For the content provider, we illustrate how to reach millions of new customers quickly and easily while having complete control over pricing, terms of use, and storage.

For developers, we will show how easy it is for them to integrate trusted premium and public domain data with business applications to build new, innovative applications quickly. Costs are lower too, with access to trial data and a pay-as-you-go subscription model.
