Abstract
There is an increasing perception that computing will one day be the 5th utility (after water, electricity, gas, and telephony), providing computing services essential to everyday needs. Cloud Computing is a paradigm to deliver this vision – but how much is hype and how much is reality? How can we leverage existing technologies to build self-managed, self-regulated, high-performance cloud architectures to meet customer needs? In this thought-provoking seminar, Dr. Rajkumar Buyya explores these and more, including realising market-oriented resource allocation of Clouds by leveraging the 3rd generation Aneka enterprise Grid technology, interconnecting Clouds for dynamic global exchange of computing resources, and the need for convergence of competing IT paradigms to deliver the 21st century vision of computing as an utility.
Biodata
Dr. Rajkumar Buyya is an Associate Professor and Reader of Computer Science and Software Engineering; and Director of the Grid Computing and Distributed Systems (GRIDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also the founding CEO of Manjrasoft Pty Ltd, a spin-off company of the University, commercialising innovations originating from the GRIDS Lab.
The Journal of Information and Software Technology ranked Dr. Buyya's work as one among the "Top 20 cited Software Engineering Articles in 1986-2005". He received the Chris Wallace Award for Outstanding Research Contribution 2008, and the 2009 IEEE Medal for Excellence in Scalable Computing for pioneering the economic paradigm for utility-oriented distributed computing platforms.
Dr. Buyya was the Founding Co-Chair of the IEEE Task Force on Cluster Computing (TFCC) from 1999-2004, Interim Co-Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC) from 2004-Sept 2005, and member of the Executive Committee of the IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP) from 2003-2009. Serving as the first elected Chair of the IEEE TCSC during 2005-2007, he played a prominent role in the creation and execution of several innovative community programs that propelled TCSC into one of the most successful TCs within the IEEE Computer Society. In recognition of these dedicated services to the computing community over a decade, the President of the IEEE Computer Society presented Dr. Buyya with a Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
