Abstract
Rolls-Royce
is a partner in two UK e-Science Grid Demonstrator Projects
each valued at over £3M.
These demonstrators are performing research on industrially
relevant grid technology and evaluating the business benefits
of applying Grid technologies to engineering.
One project, GEODISE, aims to demonstrate how Grid services
allow the integration of different design analysis tools
and provide the compute power needed to perform design optimisation
using detailed design analysis code. This project is a collaboration
between the Universities of Southampton, Oxford and Manchester
and between Rolls-Royce plc and BAe Systems plc.
The second project, DAME, aims to provide advanced diagnostics
and prognostics by making use of widely distributed operational
and design information. It illustrates how the compute power
of the Grid may be used to search poorly structured vibration
data for past occurrences of similar events and how new analysis
tools can be offered as Grid services within a heterogeneous
computing environment. This project is a collaboration between
the Universities of York, Oxford, Leeds and Sheffield and
between Rolls-Royce plc, Data Systems and Solutions Ltd and
Cybula Ltd.
The presentation will share a vision for a Grid enabled
distributed enterprise and use the two projects to illustrate
some of the opportunities and issues that need to be addressed.
