"Key Issues in Grid Computing"

Prof. David W. Walker
Cardiff University

19 January 2006 (Thursday)
1000 hours @ Auditorium
Institute of High Performance Computing
1 Science Park Road, #01-01 The Capricorn

Abstract

This talk examines important issues in the development of middleware and tools for service-oriented Grid computing in the context of research projects being undertaken in the School of Computer Science and the Welsh e-Science Centre at Cardiff University. The issues to be addressed include:
• The specification of problems – how do you program the Grid?
• The dynamic discovery of Grid resources.
• User interfaces to Grid resources exposed as Web services.
• The interoperability and federation of different Grid middleware stacks.
• Grid access to legacy applications.
• Support for remote collaboration over the Grid.

These seemingly innocuous topics quickly lead to inter-related challenges in the semantics of problem specification and resource description, quality-of-service (QoS) provision, performance prediction, and resource brokering. Other important issues, not addressed in detail in this talk, include security, trust, and dependability. Having introduced the issues in general terms, some projects at Cardiff University aimed at addressing them will be described.

Biodata

Prof David W. Walker obtained a Bachelor degree in Mathematics from Jesus College, University of Cambridge in 1976. In 1979 he obtained his Masters degree in Astrophysics (with distinction) and later in 1983 a PhD in Physics from the Queen Mary College. He is currently a Professor of High Performance Computing at Cardiff University and
also Director of Welsh e-Science Centre. He has extensive publications in journals/conferences in the area of HPC, visualization and grid computing.
