"Key
Issues in Grid Computing"

1 Science Park Road, #01-01 The Capricorn
Abstract
This talk examines important issues in the
development of middleware and tools for service-oriented
Grid computing in the context of research projects being
undertaken in the School of Computer Science and the Welsh
e-Science Centre at Cardiff University. The issues to be
addressed include:
•
The specification of problems – how do you program
the Grid?
• The dynamic discovery of Grid resources.
• User interfaces to Grid resources exposed as Web services.
• The interoperability and federation of different Grid middleware
stacks.
• Grid access to legacy applications.
• Support for remote collaboration over the Grid.
These seemingly innocuous topics quickly lead to inter-related
challenges in the semantics of problem specification and
resource description, quality-of-service (QoS) provision,
performance prediction, and resource brokering. Other important
issues, not addressed in detail in this talk, include security,
trust, and dependability. Having introduced the issues in
general terms, some projects at Cardiff University aimed
at addressing them will be described.
